Democracy, despite its faults, is still a good thing

These are patriotic smiley faces. Cornball, to be sure - yet highly defensible.

Democracy was never supposed to be perfect. In fact, it’s far from it.

But democracy is, if nothing else, a system for providing legitimacy. If we ever tweak our system of checks and balances so that they tip out of balance, we face losing our rights, constitutional and otherwise. Surely, in such a one-sided scenario, our democracy would lose its legitimacy and give way to a more sinister way of existence.

For that’s what it will be, folks: Existence.

It won’t nearly be close to being anything like how we currently Live. We all have access to multiple media communications that show how people live (or subsist) within other political systems, and we know we’ve got it pretty good by comparison. So let’s not blow it by being complacent.

I voted today. And whether your vote would cancel mine, it still counts. That makes YOU legitimate, too.
